Outlander will officially return to Starz in February, and fans have been waiting patiently for any new information about season 5. With filming continuing in Scotland, Outlander author Diana Gabaldon recently opened up about the differences between the show and her books, including how those changes will affect the storyline moving forward.
Gabaldon talks ‘Outlander’ changes
During a recent talk with fans on the Lit Forum, Gabaldon opened up about the differences between the show and her books. The Outlander author told fans that the majority of changes between the formats are small, with most of them serving as a bridge to fill in gaps in the story.
There are a few differences, however, that are significantand will affect the storyline in future books. According to Express, this includes how the show kept Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) alive following theBattle of Culloden.
In Gabaldon’s books, Murtagh does not make it past the battle and plays a small role in Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) story. Murtagh’s importance is much greater on the show, which is why producers decided to keep him on board throughout the past four seasons.
In regard to this change from the original story, Gabaldonrevealed that “it will lead to changes in the story,” at least as far as thebooks are concerned. Unfortunately, the author did not reveal what will bedifferent in future books, though it is clear that she already has a few thingsin mind.
What about season 5 of ‘Outlander’?
Gabaldon briefly touched on what’s ahead for our favorite Outlander characters. The author, whoworks as a consultant for the show, revealed that she has read the scripts foreight season 5 episodes. Gabaldon assured fans that she has not read anythingthat has made her upset or unhappy with the direction the series is taking.
Filming for the new season started this past spring and isexpected to continue for a few more weeks. The series is sadly not returninguntil next year, so fans will have to wait a few more months to find out whathas been changed.
Unfortunately, Gabaldon did not reveal any spoilers for the upcoming season, so there is no telling what will change between the show and the books. The new season is an adaptation of Gabaldon’s book, The Fiery Cross, which continues Jamie and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) journey in colonial America.
At the end of season 4, Jamie’s loyalty to the British waschallenged when he received orders to track down Murtagh. Jamie will have somedifficult decisions to make in season 5, especially if he wants to remain onthe good side of the British. Apart from Murtagh’s storyline, what else has theshow changed over the years?
Inside ‘Outlander’s’ biggest changes
One of the biggest differences between the show and thebooks is the point of view. In Gabaldon’s novels, we learn about everythingfrom Claire’s perspective. The series, however, opens things up and gives usviewpoints from several different characters.
In the first season, for example, we watched Jamie’s brutaltorture and rape at the hands of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) from hisperspective, not Claire’s. Given the intense and traumatic nature of theincident, seeing it unfold through Jamie’s eyes made sense on the show. Althoughthis is a huge change from the books, it has not received a lot of backlashfrom fans.
There are a lot of small differences as well, such astimeline shifts and the fact that the series featured a much softer Frank thanthe books. But another major change occurred last season when Brianna (SophieSkelton) ran into Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers).

In the books, Brianna recognizes one of Bonnet’s rings asthe same piece of jewelry Frank gave her mother. The series, however, flippedthis around and had the ring be something Jamie gifted Claire. Producersdecided to change this element of the story because they thought it was morebelievable.
Starz recently announced that season 5 of Outlander will premiere February 16. Producershave not said anything about Gabaldon’s recent comments regarding the show.
