CORONATION Street introduced viewers to a brand new character last night in the form of Valerie.

She arrived on the ITV cobbles to chat to Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) about his liver transplant as she was the donor's mother.

Who is Valerie in Coronation Street and how is she linked to Peter Barlow?

Valerie, played by Jackie Morrison, arrived on Coronation Street to meet for the very first time with Peter Barlow.

Peter had arranged a meeting with her as she is the mother of his liver donor.

The cab driver was keen to hear from Valerie about her son and to thank her and her family for allowing him to have his much-needed transplant.

Supported by wife Carla, Valerie insisted that she be called Val to Peter as she opened up about her son.

She told the couple that he was killed in a car accident but was pleased that if there had been any positive to his death that it was allowing for someone else to live.

Peter became emotional as he told her about his alcoholism and how he felt it was 'self-inflicted' yet her son died without any provocation.

Valerie refuted such claims and insisted alcoholism was a disease and anyone who thought otherwise was ignorant as she expressed her happiness that Peter received the transplant.

Peter gained the liver transplant three years ago amid his battle with booze and has managed to remain clean ever since.

Is Peter Barlow leaving Coronation Street?

Amid his meeting with Valerie, Peter is set to depart the Coronation Street cobbles imminently as it becomes clear he needs a fresh start following his involvement in Stephen Reid's death and his deteriorating marriage to Carla.

He will be taking a break from life in Weatherfield but the door has been left open for his return.

Peter has been contemplating head abroad to reunite with his sailing pals and take to the high seas.

Although the plan was initially shut down by Carla, having received a postcard from one of his friends, it seems that Peter has once again be considering if he should take the plunge.

We know that he will exit the show for good on Boxing Day and actor Chris has already been pictured filming his final scenes on a Manchester tram.

So just how will he leave?

And is his marriage to Carla over for good?

How long has Chris Gascoyne been in Coronation Street?

Chris first joined the show in 2000 to play the character of Peter.

His first stint saw him on the cobbles for three years before he exited in 2003.

He eventually had a brief return in 2007 before coming back permanently in October 2008.
