Why Meghan King Edmonds Won't Date a Dad

Becoming a mom is hard work, but becoming a stepmom is a whole other ball game entirely. Some people look at their stepkids as their own and take this new responsibility with stride. Others, understandably, may have a difficult time connecting and living with someone else’s children. And if a couple splits, it becomes more of a challenge for them to define their relationship with each other’s children from previous relationships. Meghan King Edmonds, though, got real about what it’s like to marry and divorce someone with four kids (adult daughters Hayley and Lauren, 14-year-old son Landon, and 11-year-old daughter Sutton). In an interview with Nick Viall on his podcast, The Viall Files, she explains why she’d never date someone who has children again.

Ouch. Seems like fightin’ words, but she’s actually just being clear about her limits — and the irony is not lost on her.

“At the risk of sounding extremely hypocritical, I’m not really into dating a guy with kids,” the Real Housewives of Orange County star tells Viall. “I love kids and I loved being a stepmom, but it’s just a lot of baggage.” King Edmonds also shares three kids with her ex-husband Jim Edmonds, including 19-month-old twin boys Hart and Hayes, and 3-year-old daughter Aspen. So, maybe she’s just not quite up for another Brady Brunch experience — and can you blame her?

“And I hate to call kids baggage, but kids are a lifelong commitment and you didn’t have any input into creating this child and it’s just hard. I’ve been a stepmom — it’s difficult,” she continues.

After all, since King Edmonds has been there, done that in terms of #stepmomlife, she has full authority to tell it like it is. “If I were to go into [a] relationship and be a stepmom, it’s hard. I know it’s hard,” King Edmonds said. “But on the flip side, a man with children understands what I’m going through, ’cause he has children.”

Still, having more kids of her own is not off the table for King. “I could totally have another kid and I do love the idea of a nuclear family. However, my kids are a lot of work. They’re young. And I need to get out of the weeds right now.”

She doesn’t, however, plan on using her and Edmond’s embryos that are on reserve like she did for her three children. Instead, she told People she plans to keep those puppies “frozen until eternity.”

Fair enough! You know, sometimes it’s best to let sleeping embryos lie. Or something like that.
