New iPhone SE 2 details revealed, but it’s not what Apple fans wanted to hear

iPhone SE 2 may very well be the most elusive handset of all time. Before every recent iPhone event, fans have whipped themselves into a giddy excitement at the prospect of a successor to the famed compact device.

After seeing the Californian company push the smartphone industry in terms of borderless screen designs, the mention of an iPhone SE 2 immediately conjures up tantalising images of a new mobile retaining the same footprint as its predecessor, but with its chunky bezels recessed in favour of a more contemporary aesthetic. In other words, an iPhone X display design squeezed into the body of the iPhone 5S.

Sound good? Yeah, we think so too.

Over the last three years Apple fans have put together captivating renders of what an iPhone SE 2 could look like. Some of the greatest of which came from a site called Tech Garage at the start of this year.

The outlet exhibited its vision of an iPhone SE 2 with the same industrial design as its predecessor but with an entirely new display on its front. In fact, the hardware was shown with minute bezels and a notch at its top for Face ID and AniMoji.

While the concept images in question will surely get many Apple fans reaching for their wallets with excitement, the same cannot be said of the latest leak on the iPhone SE 2.

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently claimed the American tech powerhouse is gearing up to launch a successor to the iPhone SE in the first quarter of next year, according to 9to5Mac.

Kuo was quoted as saying the new handset will boast an A13 Bionic processor, 3GB of RAM and a price tag that’s more affordable than Apple’s most recent iPhones.

Most notably, and disappointingly, the analyst declared the hardware will boast a design reminiscent of the iPhone 8. This, if true, means the device may not be as small as fans were expecting, or as futuristic.

Kuo’s claims suggest the iPhone SE 2 may tote a 4.7-inch LCD display and have a Touch ID home button, not Apple’s innovative Face ID tech.

Additionally, the phone could also have thick borders above and below its display. Something that would make it look relatively dated when compared to its almost bezel-less brothers.

It’s presumed that if Apple did launch the product described above, it would stop selling its iPhone 8 series entirely.

As a quick reminder, the Cupertino firm currently sells the iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11, iPhone XR and iPhone 8 new.

Unfortunately, no details about the phone alleged phone’s price was discussed by Kuo.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an iPhone SE 2 launching at the start of next year though. Back in September Japanese outlet Nikkei claimed Apple was planning to launch a “lower-cost iPhone next spring”.

It was noted the device could be intended to boost Apple’s smartphone market share that has steadily been slipping due to increased competition and from an increased amount of lower-cost devices from the likes of Chinese smartphone vendor Huawei.

Of course, it’s worth taking all the newest rumours about an iPhone SE 2 with a huge pinch of salt, especially as rumours and other murmurings have been circulating about the device for around three years now…
