Lethal Weapon season 3 casts 'female version of Riggs'

Fox’s third season of Lethal Weapon has snapped up actress Paola Lázaro to play Detective Sonya Bailey’s new partner, Louie ‘The Gute’ Gutierrez.

According to TV Line, The Gute will be joining the Robbery-Homicide Division after a year of undercover work to bring down a cartel.

Although Bailey (Michelle Mitchenor) is extremely no-nonsense in her approach, her new partner prefers to act first and think later – and yes, she’s already been compared to a certain Martin Riggs.

Series boss Matt Miller confirmed following the casting that Bailey has found “her own Riggs”.

“She gets a female partner who is a little bit unglued, a little bit crazy, always wants to resort to physicality,” he explained. “It’s a nice balance between someone who is always looking to pick a fight and Bailey, who’s someone that is really able to use her brains to solve most cases.

“The juxtaposition of those two is a fun dynamic that we’re going to continue to play throughout the season.”

Lázaro’s character will be introduced in the upcoming sixth episode of season three.

Actor Clayne Crawford portrayed Riggs on the show, before being fired over his on-set behaviour.

Following his dismissal, Crawford posted a tribute to the show on his Instagram profile, writing: “To my cast and crew – congratulations on season three. To the fans – thank you for the overwhelming support and love. Riggs was a dream role and the experience will live with me forever.

“My heart is full. Good luck next season!!”

Lethal Weapon airs on Fox in the US and ITV in the UK.
