Homes Under The Hammer's Martin Roberts appalled as couple commit 'cardinal sin' with new property | The Sun

HOMES Under the Hammer host Martin Roberts was left appalled when he viewed a property one couple had purchased, saying they committed a 'cardinal sin' when they bought it.

The presenter, 60, was shocked when he saw the inside of the three-bedroom mid-terrace house in Wales which had hit the market for £104k.

While the property looked lovely on the outside, Martin was faced with a barrage of rubbish and the previous owner's belongings when he stepped inside.

The living room floors of the Rhondda Cynon Taf home were left covered in boxes, bits of paper, random items of furniture, cables, and other objects.

The situation got even worse when Martin stepped into the kitchen and came face to face with unwashed mugs, dirty countertops, miscellaneous wires, and abandoned tools.

He said: "Tentatively exploring the house because this is the kitchen, and if the rest of the house is in a bit of a mess then you can almost guarantee that the kitchen is not going to have had a clean for a while!"

However, the BBC presenter still thought the property could be salvaged if the new owners spent a couple days working hard on clearing out the surface level clutter.

He added: "But, again, this is all superficial – the cabinets are new, the appliances look in a reasonable state – and you've just got to be a bit big and grown up about this because this is just a mess and you can just sort it out.

"It's obviously full of the previous occupant's belongings, which always makes looking around houses quite tricky; it's difficult to disassociate yourself from the emotion of seeing stuff like this, but we are looking at the property, not the bits and pieces in it, which you're going to have to clear out – a long weekend should get that sorted."

But Martin was less than impressed with Andrew and Lisa when he heard they had bought the house without even laying eyes on it.

The couple admitted they committed one of the host's "cardinal sins" when they snapped up the property for £130k just based on the pictures, and were left shocked when they explored it in person.

Nursery director Lisa confessed: "We didn't really come and have a visit, we bought it totally blind, we looked at the images, thought it looked alright – just needed a clean – that's what we thought. We should have, perhaps in hindsight, come and had one of the viewings, but we didn't."

The revamp along with the property costs ended up totalling £145k, when the pair had only expected to shell out £10k max to spruce it up.
