It’s launch season for smartphone manufacturers and Xiaomi is the latest to announce a blockbuster new product.
The Chinese company revealed the latest in its MIX line of premium concept phones at a glitzy launch event yesterday. The Mi MIX 4 is the first phone in the series for nearly three years, following the Mi MIX 3’s launch in 2019. And we can’t wait to get our hands on it.
The most impressive new feature is a hidden selfie camera, which Xiaomi has been working on for years. The company calls it a “Camera Under Panel” or CUP design, and it means there’s no need for notches or holes interrupting your phone screen. Instead, the camera is “virtually invisible to the eye”, because it’s located underneath the screen.
Pulling this off took loads of advanced tech to make sure the picture quality stays high even from under a 400ppi screen. Xiaomi created a new material as well as special circuitry and algorithms to make sure the camera could still pick up light, colour and detail.
With screen specs like this, you’ll be glad not to miss a pixel of space. The MIX 4 boasts a 6.67” AMOLED 3D curved display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 480Hz touch sampling for improved touchscreen responsiveness.
The MIX 4 is also grabbing attention for its advanced chip technology. It’s the first smartphone to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chip – allowing it to do more advanced tasks, faster.
Much like the new Google Pixel 6, with its powerful Tensor chip, the MIX 4 will be able to translate text, photos and create real-time audio translations and subtitles. It’s sure to make holidays abroad a breeze when we can finally get away again.

Its other specs are just as impressive. The MIX 4 comes with a 4,500mAh battery, 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging. Using Boost Mode, the battery can fully charge in under 15 minutes.
There’s three rear cameras with a total of 129MP, including an ultra-wide angle and periscope lens, which can handle night scenes, low light and ultra-clear images. It is also kitted out with a 1014 top speaker and 1216P linear bottom speaker for hi-res audio playback. Storage ranges from 128GB, with 8GB RAM, right up to 512GB with 12GB RAM.
Xiaomi has stuck to classic colours for this launch: the MIX 4 will be available in grey, white and black.
The price? It’s comparable to the latest Pixel and iPhone models at between 4,999 yuan (£556) and 6,299 yuan (£701), depending on the storage selected.
The new flagship phone is part of the company’s big plans for world dominance. Ahead of the launch, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said the company wanted to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor within three years. It’s definitely not just a pipe dream: Xiaomi was the top-selling smartphone brand in Europe between March and June this year, selling 12.7 million units. And with this week’s release, it might just become the Android manufacturer to beat.
The company also announced a swathe of new products at yesterday’s launch, including the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 tablet, Mi OLED TV and a new Mi Smart Speaker.
