Love football, but sometimes wish it could be a little more… exciting? Viewers who want a little extra oomph alongside their favourite games will love the new feature coming to BT.

Hype Mode is a never-seen-before way of watching sports – and it’s exclusively available on the BT Sport app.

When activated, Hype Mode overlays on-screen descriptions and graphics onto the live action we love. For example, shot tracers could be lit up with blazes of fire, player runs will get smoke trails and “larger-than-life” graphics on the pitch will show shot speeds and descriptions of key plays.

While it’s supposedly aimed at both kids and adults, the graphics we’ve seen so far look straight out of an anime cartoon.

You can judge for yourself this Saturday during the Manchester United vs Leeds United game, where the new mode will be kicking off for the first time.

In the future, you can experience it on BT Sports coverage of live Saturday lunchtime Premier League broadcasts, plus select broadcasts from the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Sky Q explain simple way to navigate the home screen

BT Sport also recently launched a Manager Mode to give customers more unique insights into the action. It shows a mini map with both teams’ real-time formations along with data showing key touches in the opponent’s half and time spent in the opposing team’s half. You’ll also get player speed data to better understand how your team is moving around the pitch.

If that’s not enough footie data for you, you can also use the new timeline feature on the BT Sport app on your console or smart TV. It brings up an interactive timeline of each match, showing key moments and incidents – and even skip back to the live action. It’s also available for Premier League and Champions League games.

Jamie Hindhaugh, chief operating officer, BT Sport, said: “Hype Mode is a first of its kind innovation in the UK around live football broadcast that will provide a new viewing experience for children and families, while maintaining the integrity of the competitions we cover.”

The new features certainly sound impressive but will they truly change how we watch the beautiful game – or just add some flashy distractions? We’ll be tuning in to find out!
