Mesut Ozil not watching as Arsenal scored second goal during stunning Rennes win

MESUT OZIL was not even watching as Arsenal scored their second goal against Rennes last night.

The German star, 30, turned away after thinking the ball was going out of play, throwing his hands in the air.

But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had other ideas.

Aaron Ramsey's one-two with the Gabon striker looked set to go out of play, especially with Sead Kolasinac well offside.

But Aubameyang hunted it down and managed to dig out a fine cross with the ball on the line. Ainsley Maitland-Niles – who fortunately had remained alert – then ran in at the back post to head in.

When the forward – who later celebrated with a Black Panther mask – got his foot to the ball, Ozil had already turned around in frustration.

It was only when he saw Maitland-Niles spring into action that he realised it was still in play.

Even then, he did not seem to celebrate immediately despite Arsenal finally putting themselves ahead on away goals.

BT Sport picked up on the incident during their analysis.

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown said: "It did [make us laugh]. It's actually one of those where Maitland-Niles does especially well because he doesn't switch off.

"Ozil just thinks it's over, the young man doesn't."

John Hartson added: "Yes, don't switch off!"

One Arsenal fan, Alex Rose, also spotted the hilarious moment.

He tweeted: "Look at Ozil! Not even looking at the ball, daft lad!!!!"

Look at Ozil! Not even looking at the ball, daft lad!!!!

But even if he did not show his happiness when Maitland-Niles headed in, the German – who has started three games in a row now – quashed any doubts by taking to Twitter afterwards.

He wrote: "Great comeback from the team! Difficult week for us, but we showed good character and determination to reach the #UEL quarters! #WeAreTheArsenal #YaGunnersYa #M1Ö"
