Gerwyn Price vows to park business interests and focus on darts ahead of majors

Darts fans can expect to see a more focused Gerwyn Price in 2023 after the world number one vowed to cut back on his business interests.

It has been a year of two halves for the Iceman, who struggled for form and fitness at the beginning of 2022. Price sustained a hand injury as well as complaining of potential burnout amid the Premier League’s new format, which features a mini tournament on each night. Despite hitting two nine-darters in Belfast, Price never seriously threatened to qualify for the play-offs and finished a lowly seventh in the eight-player league.

However, after a brief break from action, Price has rediscovered his best form over the last few months. After impressing for Wales at the World Cup of Darts, Price reached the final of the World Matchplay, hitting another nine-darter in the process.

He recently won the World Series Finals in Amsterdam and is now feeling confident ahead of the upcoming PDC majors, culminating in the World Championship at the Alexandra Palace over Christmas.

Price has interests outside of darts and has been working on numerous building projects this year. He also planned to fight in a charity boxing match a few months ago before pulling out due to his hand injury. However, the 37-year-old says the time has come for him to reset and focus more on his darts.

“Next year, I’m going to slow down a little bit on the property and put a little bit more into the darts,” he told Online Darts TV. “I’ll still miss a couple [of tournaments] but I’ll be more concentrated than I have been over the last year.

“This year I’ve had a few projects on the go with the cafe, doing up a bungalow up for my dad and doing up a property for myself.

“When I’m away, my mind’s still at home and it’s hard work to try and concentrate. Sometimes it can cost you. Even though I’m trying to run a business back home, it can cost me money here [on tour].

“So I’m going to slow down a bit with that next year and put a lot more effort and concentration into the PDC.”
