Alicia Vikander has opened up about the pain she went through after suffering an ‘extreme’ miscarriage before getting pregnant with her first child.

The Tomb Raider actress, 33, revealed in September 2021 that she had quietly welcomed a baby son – now 17 months old – with her husband Michael Fassbender, 45, earlier that year.

But Alicia has now spoken out about the ‘painful’ struggles she faced on her journey to becoming a mother, admitting in a new interview with The Times that ‘it took time’ for the couple to conceive their first baby together.

‘We have a child now, but it took us time,’ she said, before revealing that she had suffered a ‘painful, extreme’ miscarriage before she got pregnant with her son.

Alicia stars in the new Sky Atlantic TV show Irma Vep playing a pop star who is forced to go back on stage shortly after suffering a miscarriage.

The actress says addressing such painful issues on screen helps her deal with her own grief.

She also compared her experiences to her 2016 movie The Light Between Oceans in which she starred opposite Michael, with the pair playing a childless couple who experience two miscarriages and ultimately adopt a baby girl who is lost at sea.

Alicia added: ‘[The miscarriage] was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film [The Light Between Oceans]. That film has another meaning now.’

The Ex Machina star added: ‘Sometimes you go through things that are tough in life and if you have an office job you can step away for a bit.

‘But there are times that myself or colleagues have been through something and, well, I can’t understand how they went on to the red carpet afterwards. To be met by people asking, ‘How are you doing?’ Given what they had just been through? Most people would not be able to step out of their house.’

Michael and Alicia tied the knot in October 2017 – three years after they began dating, following meeting on set of The Light Between Oceans.

She has avoided discussing her and Michael’s child publicly – or revealing their name or sex – but in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Oscar-winning star opened up about motherhood, stating she always puts her ‘little family’ first.

She said: ‘In my little family, with my husband and my child, we travel together, always. That’s the rule. We do jobs so one of us can always be with the baby.’

During that same interview, Alicia shed some light on her fertility struggles, telling the publication that she’d ‘struggled for a while’.

‘I tried to get pregnant for a while,’ she said. ‘So I had tough times during lockdown. I struggled for a while. For a while I didn’t think that I could get pregnant.’

She added she decided to talk about her issues to help other women going through similar experiences.

Alicia went on: ‘I kind of stopped and thought, ‘Am I going to talk about this?’ But I think it’s universal and so many women go through similar things. And it’s tough.’

Alicia and Michael, who currently live together in Lisbon, Portugal, are known for being notoriously private and hadn’t previously spoken about whether they would have children together.
