Spoilers: Mary kisses a stunned Vanessa during heart to heart in Emmerdale

There are some poignant scenes in upcoming Emmerdale episodes when Mary (Louise Jameson) and Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) have a heart-to-heart about Mary’s sexuality.

Mary recently confided in new friend Kim Tate (Claire King) that she’s gay. Gaining courage from Kim’s supportive reaction, Mary’s next step was to talk to her daughter Rhona (Zoe Henry) about it. The conversation wasn’t easy, with Rhona initially questioning whether her entire life had been based on a lie as Mary admitted that she’d always known she was gay, even before she married Rhona’s father.

Rhona eventually said she understood that her mum’s decisions had been what she felt was right at the time. Mary knew she had the support of her family and friends.

In a small community such as Emmerdale the chances to explore a newly-expressed sexual identity are fairly limited, so Mary is naturally drawn into a discussion with Vanessa. As Mary takes the opportunity to be able to talk about her feelings with someone who understands, she opens up to Vanessa and the reaction she gets is completely kind and sympathetic.

Then Mary mistakes Vanessa’s kindness for something more, and leans in for a kiss.

How will Vanessa react?
