Ukraine ammunitions depot rocked by huge explosion forcing mass evacuation

More than 10,000 people were forced to evacuate after the mystery blasts 109 miles east of the Ukrainian capital Kiev early on Tuesday morning.

The surrounding area is being evacuated and the head of Ukraine's armed forces has gone to the site, a statement said.

Shocking social media footage showed the sky glowing orange and people screaming as blasts ring out at 3.30am.

The area has been put on lock down for air and land travel.

There was no immediate news of any casualties.

Reports say  220 emergency staffers and 60 technical units have been dispatched to the scene.

Airspace within 12 miles from the depot has been closed.

Emergency service crews, national police and The National Guard have all been alerted.

The Ukraine’s Interior Ministry has called for additional reinforcements, The State Emergency Service reported.

The scale of the explosions and the cause are not yet clear.

Ukraine has suffered in recent years as a result of a four-year conflict with Russia.
