Two gang members who used a homemade shotgun to blast through a rival’s front door have been jailed for more than 11 years.

Connor Hennigan, 25, and Liam Clough, 19, fired the shots at a property in Leeds, West Yorkshire, on January 11 before fleeing in a Mercedes.

Hennigan then drove to his grandparents’ house and stashed the weapon under a caravan in their drive, Leeds Crown Court heard this week.

Police arrested both men the same day and seized the Mercedes which, crucially, had an onboard device showing their exact movements,

Appearing in the dock this week Hennigan and Clough were jailed for six years and five-years-and-three months respectively.

Both men, from Leeds, admitted possessing a firearm while Hennigan also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving for his part in the escape.

The court heard how the shooting happened in the Seacroft area of the city just before 7.30am on January 11.

Armed police arrested Hennigan at the wheel of the Mercedes, which belonged to a family friend, after a short car chase around an hour later.

The Mercedes onboard tracking device showed the offender picked Clough up at around 6.30am the day of the shooting, before driving to the scene.

Later on January 11, police recovered the homemade 12 gauge single-barrelled gun from underneath the caravan on Hennigan’s grandparents drive.

Officers also found spent shotgun cartridges and ammunition for the gun and Clough’s DNA was found on the gun’s trigger and muzzle.

Jailing the pair, Judge Christopher Batty said: ‘It was a potentially lethal weapon.

‘That weapon was taken in the car that you were using Hennigan and you collected Clough for support.

‘With two others, you went to a house and that firearm was discharged towards the front door.’

The court heard Hennigan has 27 previous convictions for 45 offences including affray, burglary, possession of drugs and battery.

Clough has five previous convictions for 17 offences including theft and criminal damage.

Craig Sutcliffe, representing Hennigan, described the shotgun as an ‘improvised weapon’.

Paul Hodgkinson, for Clough, said his client’s crime was ‘out of character’.

As well as a custodial sentence, Judge Batty also banned Hennigan from driving for five years.
