Trump says planes are becoming ‘too complex to fly’ amid crashes

Apparently addressing the fatal crashes involving two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft within months of each other, President Trump suggested going back to a “simpler” time because planes are becoming too technical for pilots to fly and he doesn’t want Albert Einstein to have to man the controls.

“Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better,” he posted on his Twitter account.

“Split second decisions are needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!” he said.

An Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on Sunday minutes after takeoff, killing 157 people, and a Lion Air plane plunged into the Java Sea in October killing 189 people.

Both crashes involved Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Following the crash in Ethiopia, a number of carriers and countries, including the United Kingdom, China, Australia, have suspended use of the airplane model.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Monday said it had no plans yet to ground the plane.

Both crashes are still under investigation, but Boeing on Monday said it would upgrade software systems in the 737 MAX 8s designed to make the “already safe aircraft even safer.”
