Surfer, 21, wiped out by terrifying 60ft wave at Nazaré beach in Portugal

Incredible footage from a beach in Portugal shows an Australian surfer charging a huge wave before being wiping out.

Russell Bierke managed to keep control for a moment before crashing into the water after a massive surf explosion.

The 21-year-old, who was in Nazaré, known for its very high breaking waves, was able to resurface in time to catch a quick breath before being forced under again.

He was rescued by award-winning big wave surfer Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca from Brazil, who arrived on a jet-ski.

The lucky escape happened during the biggest session of the season so far, on November 7, as waves exceedded 60 feet in height.

Nazaré is renowned for its gigantic waves and attracts professional surfers from all over the world.

In April this year, Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed on an incredible day off the famous Portuguese beach.

On the very same day, British surfer Andrew Cotton broke his back in a horror fall that won the award for Wipeout of the Year.
