A son who screamed ‘I’m going to kill you’ as he stabbed his mother 18 times for trying to clean up her home has been jailed for 10 years.

Cobina Kessie, 28, stabbed his hoarder mother, Mary Kessie, in the face, back, breast, rib and arm at their home in Bermondsey, south London.

As she tried to crawl into the bedroom to call police, her son ripped the phone wire out from the socket.

Ms Kessie was left with a 12cm cut to her face and an 8cm gash to her shoulder, Inner London Crown Court heard.

She has since forgiven her son and wanted police to drop the charges against him.

Kessie gave up his university studies to care for his brother Richard, who requires round the clock care for his cerebral palsy, leaving only him and his mother as carers.

He kept his own room clean and had clashed with his mother previously because she was a ‘hoarder by her own admission’.

Tensions boiled over on May 18 when Ms Kessie told him to leave home after he threw away some of her belongings.

He left the house but returned later that evening to talk. After he was told to leave again, he went to a nearby Asda and brought three kitchen knives.

He took the largest knife and returned to the home at 11.45pm. He was told to leave again when he stabbed her repeatedly as she lay naked on the floor.

She managed to escape and seek refuge with a neighbour who called the police.

In a letter read to the court Mrs Kessie said she was ‘keen for the family to be back together.’

Judge Mark Bishop told Kessie: ‘This is a tragic case for you Mr Kessie and your family.

Cobina Kessie was sentenced to nine years and seven months at Inner London Crown Court

He added: ‘She had no idea the defendant would react in this way to, in her words, being chucked out.

‘There’s no psychological harm but in an event as this I have no doubt will have taken a toll on her.

‘Given the intention to kill being made clear there is a high level of culpability but this is an unusual case.

‘This is more of a spontaneous attack than a planned attempt to kill.

‘You are remorseful and I accept that remorse is sincere and heartfelt.

‘You also have good character not just previously but in terms of your commitment to caring for your brother.’

Kessie, of Bermondsey, admitted attempted murder.

He was jailed for nine years and seven months.
