President Trump presided over a naturalization ceremony for five new Americans in a surprise pre-taped video aired Tuesday during the 2020 Republican National Convention.
The president emphasized the achievements of each of the newly-minted Americans and applauded them for entering the county through the proper channels.
“You followed the rules, you obeyed the laws, you learned your history, embraced our values, and proved yourselves to be men and women of the highest integrity,” Trump said in the clip, which was filmed at the White House.
“It’s not so easy,” Trump added. “You went through a lot. And we appreciate you being here with us today.”
The ceremony began with acting US Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf administering the oath of allegiance to the participants.
Trump then took to the lectern to welcome them “into our great American family.”
He introduced each member of the group — from Bolivia, Lebanon, India, Sudan and Ghana — highlighting their personal and professional accomplishments.
“Congratulations,” Trump said. “Great going.”
