Pro golfer, 41, is shot dead at Georgia country club after he ‘tried to stop truck from driving onto the links’: Cops launch manhunt for shooter

A pro golfer was fatally shot at an Atlanta-area country club after he reportedly tried to stop a pickup truck from driving onto the links. 

The Georgia State Golf Association identified the victim as Gene Siller, a pro golfer, golfing instructor and Director of Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, where the shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon.

The gunman has not been identified and remained at large as of Sunday morning. 

‘All of us at the GSGA are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred earlier today at Pinetree CC. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gene Siller’s family and friends,’ the Georgia State Golf Association tweeted.

The Georgia PGA also issued a statement offering its condolences on Twitter:  

‘Tragedy has stricken the Georgia Section PGA in the loss of our Member, Gene Siller. Thoughts and prayers for his family and the Pinetree Country Club family.’

The Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia, about 27 miles outside of Atlanta, is where Saturday afternoon’s fatal shooting happened

Siller leaves behind a wife and two young children. A GoFundMe has been set up to help his family.  

Details surrounding the shooting remain scant, other than it happened around 2.30pm Saturday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, about 27 miles outside Atlanta. 

Footage from WAGA-TV showed a white pickup truck stuck on a hill in the middle of the club’s golf course.

A witness told Fox 5 Atlanta that someone, later identified by the golf organizations as Siller, tried to stop the pickup truck from going on to the golf course when he was shot. 

The Georgia State Golf Association and Georgia PGA issued statements of condolences to Siller’s family

Neighbor John Lavender told WAGA-TV that he heard ‘five, six booms go off’ and wasn’t sure whether it was gunshots or fireworks. ‘You just don’t think it’s gunshots in this area,’ he said.

Officials described the suspect as a 6-foot-1-inch Hispanic male with long hair, dark-colored work pants and a white or tan shirt.

The suspect was last seen in the area of Pinetree Country Club and was headed toward Frey Lake Road.  

The country club is near the campus of Kennesaw State University. After the shooting, the school tweeted that there were no credible threats to campus

Details surrounding the shooting are scarce, but police in Cobb County, Georgia are looking for the gunman
