Britain’s Prince William arrived Thursday for a two-day visit in New Zealand where he met with survivors of the deadly terror attack on two mosques in Chirstchurch and honored the servicemen and women of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
During a touching visit at the Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, the Duke of Cambridge met with 5-year-old Alen Alsati and her father, Wasseim, who were both injured in the March 15 attack that left 50 people dead.
Alen, who woke from a coma earlier this week after suffering critical injuries in the massacre, asked William from her hospital bed: “Do you have a daughter,” a touching video released by Kensington Palace shows.
“Do I have a daughter? Yes, she’s called Charlotte…she’s about the same age as you,” William responded.
William, who received a traditional Maori greeting by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern when he touched down in the country, also met with first responders of the Christchurch attack.
“You did an incredible job on a very bad day,” William told the responders.
During Thursday’s services for Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates all those who lost their lives in service to their country, William laid a wreath at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
The wreath read: “We will never forget the sacrifice of the Anzacs. With deep gratitude, William,” local media reported.
William made the visit to New Zealand on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II at the request of Ardern, according to Kensington Palace.
