Passengers safe after Boeing 737 skids off runway into river in Jacksonville

More than 100 passengers were safely evacuated Friday night after a Boeing 737 skidded off a runway and into the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Fla., local police said.

The commercial jet had been arriving from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay when it skidded off a runway at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville. Every passenger was accounted for after the crash, Jacksonville Police said in a tweet.

“#JSO Marine Unit was called to assist @NASJax_ in reference to a commercial airplane in shallow water. The plane was not submerged. Every person is alive and accounted for,” the tweet said of the dramatic rescue.

Responders were working to control jet fuel in the water, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry tweeted.

He added in another tweet, “@realDonaldTrump White House called to help as the situation was developing.”
