NAS Jacksonville – Plane carrying 142 from Guantanamo Bay crashes into Florida river while trying to land

A PASSENGER plane with 142 on board has “skidded” off the runway and into a river in Florida.

The Boeing 737 is understood to have crashed into St Johns River while trying to land at Naval Air Station Jacksonville at 10.30pm (local time) on Friday.

The plane was flying from the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base with 136 passengers and seven crew members on board.

Reports suggest some passengers have been injured, but there are not believed to be any deaths.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry urged his followers to "pray while they [the Fire and Rescue team] work".

Posting on Twitter, he said: "Teams are working to control jet fuel in the water."

He later shared an update, saying: “I’ve been briefed that all lives have been accounted for."

Air station officials said: “Navy security and emergency response personnel are on the scene and monitoring the situation."

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet the plane was in “shallow water,” and was “not submerged".
