New flu jabs for over-65s will prevent hundreds of deaths this winter, health bosses say

NEW flu jabs will prevent hundreds of deaths this winter, health bosses say.

The vaccine for the over-65s has an extra ingredient to boost their immune systems.

And a jab which protects against four rather than three strains will be given to others at risk, such as pregnant women and health workers.

It is hoped the new jab for older people will alone prevent 700 deaths in hospital and many more at home.

And it should help the NHS by saving more than 30,000 GP visits and 2,000 hospital stays.

Prof Paul Cosford, from Public Health England, said: “We’re going with the best possible vaccine we’ve got and we’re confident it will have a significant impact.”
