Indian MP sparks outrage turning up to Parliament dressed as Hitler

An Indian MP has sparked outrage by turning up in Parliament dressed as HITLER.

Naramalli Sivaprasad donned a fake mustache and swastika armband as he appeared alongside lawmakers, claiming his outfit was highlighting a "broken promise" by the Prime Minister.

The former actor, who has previously dressed up as Hindu gods and as a schoolboy, has been heavily criticised for the move.

Explaining his bizarre and offensive attire, the 67-year-old told the BBC he wanted to "grab attention", and said he was likening the government to the Nazi leader.

He said: "I have a reason for everything I do. Hitler never sought anyone’s counsel and he did not work for the welfare of people."

Stunned social media users voiced their horror at his actions.

One person wrote on Twitter : "An elected MP attended parliament dressed as Hitler – the man who sent millions to their deaths in gas chambers and war. It only caused amusement. Any surprise then that hate is so normalised in India."

But others have defended him, with one, Harsh Kumar, posting pictures of some of Sivaprasad’s outfits and writing: "I think he deserves an award for this."

The MP represents the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, and claims the government has gone back on promises to grant it "special category" – which would mean it gets extra cash for development projects.

He describes himself as an "artiste", and is a fierce critic of Indian government leader Narendra Modi.
