Heartbroken parents pay tribute to 'mummy's boy' Luke Jobson found dead in river after night out – as 5 arrested over manslaughter

The 22-year-old had been missing for more than 48 hours when his body was discovered, following a frantic search by family and friends.

Last night, family members rallied on social media and demanded "answers" after Luke's body was found in the River Tees.

Today, his parents said they "couldn't have hoped for a better son", adding they "want to celebrate him".

It comes as five men were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after coming forward to police.

Luke's body was found two days after going missing on a night out in Yarm, Cleveland.

Witnesses said they saw the trainee engineer running from a gang of lads in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It was claimed on social media he had been chased by five men in a Golf GTI who "tried to run him over", before the trainee engineer was then allegedly doused in pepper spray and left in a river.

His heartbroken mum Lisa Jobson, 46, a nursery nurse, said: "Me and his dad are so proud we made somebody like him.

"I couldn't have asked for a better son, we're proud of everything he's done and everything he is.

"We want to celebrate him. We just want to say a massive thanks to everybody and we want everybody to remember him for the good.

"Luke was very loving. He was a mummy's boy, a bit more open with me. He used to confide in me and ask me what I thought of things. He would listen to me.

"He lived for the present, he enjoyed his life and he worked hard for it."

We want to celebrate him. We just want to say a massive thanks to everybody and we want everybody to remember him for the good.

Luke's dad, Stuart Banks, 49, a joiner, added: "Luke was funny. He was driven and funny.

"He was really good at football and he nearly had a trial for Darlington.

"We don't know if it was a proper trial, but he would let you think it was.

"He was a really genuine person. A friend described him perfectly when he said, 'lasses loved him, lads loved him, but were jealous of him and how many lasses loved him'."

Luke, who went to St. Patrick's RC Comprehensive School and Harewood Primary School in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, was just months away from qualifying as a electrical and mechanical engineer after four years of studying and an  apprenticeship.

Lisa added: "I can't thank everybody enough for helping with the search. It took my breath away and really showed how much love there is for him.

"Every area was covered, people were going everywhere to look for him. You don't realise how good people are. The respect I have for these people is just massive. I want to say a massive thank you to all of them."

Paying tribute to her elder brother Annaleis Banks, 16 said: "Luke was my best friend, he was the girl version of me."

His older half-sister, Emma Atkinson, 29, who works for Middlesbrough Council, added: "We want to thank everybody and we want people to think about what they're putting on social media. If people have information to share contact the police."

TRAGIC FIND

A statement on Facebook from Cleveland Police this morning said: "A body recovered in the river at Yarm by officers who had been searching for missing Luke Jobson has sadly been confirmed as being that of the 22-year-old.

"Our thoughts are with Luke’s family and friends at this very difficult time and specially trained officers will continue to support them.

"Five males who came forward (after police appeals for information on the circumstances leading up to the discovery of Luke’s body) have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

"Two 18 year olds and two 16 year olds have now been released under investigation, while an 18 year old remains in custody facing questioning.

"We are aware of various rumours and speculation circulating on social media but we would stress that sharing these further can be very distressing for Luke’s family as well as being unhelpful to our on-going inquiries."

He was a really genuine person. A friend described him perfectly when he said, 'lasses loved him, lads loved him, but were jealous of him and how many lasses loved him'.

Yesterday Dani – Luke's girlfriend since October last year – posted she was "living in a nightmare" this morning, adding: "I miss you so much come home."

Pictures of the pair, and Luke with smiling pals, filled his Facebook page as family and friends worked to find him.

But tragically police found a body yesterday afternoon, today confirming it had been identified as Luke.

Earlier in the day his cousin, Jake, wrote: "My best friend and cousin but everyone knows we were more like brothers always and forever please come home safe soon."

Luke's aunt, Kelly, had urged people to look in wheelie bin and clothes banks as hundreds joined the search for Luke before they were stood down.

She said Luke was seen jumping over a wall at Yarm School after being chased by five men.

She had written on Facebook over the weekend: "Luke needs to be found an needs to be home – FAST, he is 22, he wouldn't hurt a fly, he is popular, happy calm lad that needs to be found ASAP."

Specially trained officers were seen on the water as the River Tees was searched, and public groups walked through 16 local spots to find a trace of Luke.

About 100 people arrived at Yarm School yesterday morning to help Luke's family search for him.

People shared Facebook appeals and joined the effort to find the missing man, before being told by the family to leave the police to continue the work yesterday afternoon.

Cops at Cleveland Police had asked for anyone with private CCTV or dashcam footage in the area to come forward.

A spokesman said: "If anyone has information they believe could help our inquiries please pass this directly to Cleveland Police via the 101 number, quoting Event 14944."
