Giant inflatable clitoris is set up in Paris to highlight lack of sexual education for many girls

  • The activists wanted to draw attention to the ‘widespread sexual illiteracy’
  • They used the five-metre clitoris to call upon better education in schools

French activists celebrated International Women’s Day by setting up a giant five metre clitoris opposite the ‘phallic’ Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The Clito Gang carried the giant inflatable sexual organ on to the Place du Trocadéro in view of the tower about half a mile away.

Members of the gang said they set up the stunt to draw attention to the widespread ‘sexual illiteracy’.

International Women’s Day is held annually to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while raising awareness regarding gender equality and parity across the globe.

They chose the spot for the symbolism opposite the 324-foot tower, built in 1887.

Group co-founder Julia Pietri said: ‘The penis and clitoris are treated differently.

‘Your Clito gang wanted to draw attention to the widespread sexual illiteracy with the action.

‘A quarter of girls do not know that they have a clitoris. And 82 percent do not know that it is an erogenous erectile tissue.

‘Therefore, there is an urgent need to provide better education in schools.’

The move received criticism online from both male and female social media users.

The Clito Group’s actions opposite the Eiffel Tower drew scorn from some people

One said: ‘This is counterproductive, a woman is not a sexual object, but putting forward this kind of thing produces the opposite effect.’

Another added: ‘As much as I am very committed to the rights and respect for women, I find this action completely null.’

And one user commented: ‘It’s a shame: the struggle of women deserves better, much better, than reducing them to a sexual organ of pleasure.’

The activists also aim to better protect girls and women from sexual violence.

Victoria and David Beckham lead the celebrity tributes on Monday morning as International Women’s Day kicked off with an empowering new message and another opportunity to celebrate with balloons, gifts and obligatory messages of support.

And Victoria, 46, paid tribute to ‘all the ladies and young girls out there’ in a short, empowering video message shared with her 28 million Instagram followers.

Presenter Davina McCall defied convention by crediting a man for his work on behalf of women’s rights.

She said: ‘Happy International Women’s Day. I actually want to shout out a man; I’m going to say thank you to Jonathan Ross. He’s a massive supporter of women and equal rights and he does it kind of quite quietly but he’s really brilliant.

‘Thanks to the men that support us on our journey. I’m going to be fighting this year for women to get better help around the menopause. I think this is a great place of inequality because I think that if men went through the menopause they would not be having the hard time we have trying to get help with it.’
