Pictures have emerged of a person making a frantic escape down a ladder from a house fire in Wolverhampton that claimed the lives of a disabled mother and her adult son.

The image, which was taken by the owner of a neighbouring property shows a man climbing down a ladder against the garage of the home which burned, killing a woman in her 60s and man in his 30s.

The photographer said he saw the man climb down on to the back roof of the house before jumping onto the garage roof, against which firefighters had placed a ladder.

The neighbour said: ‘It was around 3am and my girlfriend heard yelling. I thought it was someone coming back from the pub on a Saturday night.

‘My girlfriend went into the other bedroom and saw the flames, they were huge. 

The bedroom on the left hand side was full of smoke and there were loads of emergency services.’ 

Fire crews rushed to the property in Deans Road after reports of a house fire and were met with huge flames and thick smoke.

The woman’s husband is believed to have survived by climbing out of a window on to a neighbour’s roof. Emergency services (pictured) were still on scene 12 hours after the house fire

It is believed the woman’s husband survived by climbing out of a window on to a neighbour’s roof where he was reported to have screamed for help.

He received treatment for smoke inhalation by paramedics who attended the scene.

Neighbours broke into the house through the front door in a bid to save the family. , but were forced back by flames and could only save the family dog.

Fire service and police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Flowers were left outside the charred property today, paying tribute to the family.

One neighbour said: ‘They were a really nice family, they were always around taking their dog for a walk. It’s absolutely terrible.’

Rhys Brockhouse, 23, said he called 999 when he saw the flames.

He said: ‘I heard screams so I looked out the window. As I looked down the road the flames caught my eye. 

‘I phoned 999 and saw a man hanging off the roof. Then I saw the front window blown off. After I called 999 people flooded over.’

His sister, Shannon, 20, said: ‘They were very nice. They would always make the effort to wave and say hello when they saw you. I woke up and my brother said he could hear yelping.’ 

Another neighbour, who said her partner ran to the fire when it broke out, said: ‘We were sitting downstairs talking. It was quite late. We could hear screaming and I assumed it was a fox. 

‘My partner saw the other neighbour running out and he followed him and I ran after him and saw them trying to kick the door down. 

‘An old man was on the garage roof shouting ‘help’ in Punjabi. They got in and were able to get the dog out. It was really hot though so they couldn’t get upstairs.’

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: ‘At 03:02 on the 21st April, West Midlands Fire Service were notified of a house fire on Deans Road, Eastgate, Wolverhampton.

‘The first fire appliance arrived at the incident after 3 minutes and 38 seconds and was presented with a severe fire on the first floor of the property.

‘Despite the hard work of the firefighters at the scene, it is with great sadness that we have to report that one man and one woman have been pronounced dead at the scene.

‘Another man was rescued from the property by the fire service and has received treatment for smoke inhalation by paramedics.’

The fire brigade are investigating the causes of the fire. 

One resident claimed they heard shouting when the fire broke out.

‘We heard someone shouting. I looked out of the window and saw smoke,’ they said.

‘My partner said the house was on fire. We went running over and so did our other neighbour who kicked the door panel off and ran inside.’

 Fire service and police are investigating the cause of the blaze and a fire service spokesman said the ‘man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene’

Another resident said a man at the burning house had got on to the conservatory roof.

They said: ‘He was on the conservatory roof shouting for help.

‘He was in white clothes and was in absolute shock. It was horrible.’

The partner of the man who ran into the house explained what happened next.

She said: ‘My partner managed to run half way up the stairs but couldn’t go further as it was too hot.

‘The next minute the fire brigade pulled my partner out and an explosion blew out the front window.’
