A nine-month-old baby girl has been found dead in the water on an Australian beach.
The tragic discovery was made by a passer-by at the Surfers Paradise beach on the Gold Coast of Queensland.
It is understood the infant was part of a family which had been sleeping rough, and her parents have been taken in for questioning by police.
A two-year-old child has been put in protective care following the baby’s death on Monday morning.
The girl’s parents, a 48-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, were found around 5km away from the scene, news.com reports.
Her death is being treated as "unnatural".
Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said it was "not your typical crime scene", and described it as a "traumatic" investigation.
He said: “The body was located on the edge of the surf so clearly she had been in the water.
"I don’t know how long for. We will set out trying to find that out today as best we can."
The detective said the baby did not have any visible injuries.
Paramedics desperately attempted to revive the young girl, but were unable to save her.
