England open to playing Test in Toronto after David Argyle states wish to host match

The owner of Toronto Wolfpack is determined to get a ‘tier one’ game on the other side of the Atlantic and Wayne Bennett’s side and the re-born Lions are on his list of sides he wants to take trans-Atlantic.

Now England sources have made it clear to SunSport that they would be willing to play 3,500 miles from home.

Mining millionaire Argyle, who bankrolled the Wolfpack to the brink of Super League, would love to see them take on Australia, New Zealand or new powerhouse Tonga.

He said: “I’d love to host a Test match at this time of year, one that would have tier one nations.

“And I’d love to involve England or Great Britain against another tier one nation

“I’ve had some preliminary discussions with tier one nations. There are sides who would really, really enjoy coming to Toronto.”

Rugby league is trying to get a hold in north America although June’s Denver Test, which attracted more fans than the First Test between England and New Zealand in Hull, has collapsed for future years because promoter Jason Moore did not hand over cash.

Australia will not face England or Great Britain until 2020 as next year’s tour is set to take place in New Zealand with Tests against the Kiwis, Tonga, Fiji and Samoa before heading to Papua New Guinea.

BMO Field, home of Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, would hold any Canadian game and Argyle is convinced it would sell out.

He added: “32,000 tickets would be snapped up at the drop of a hat.”

Meanwhile, Aussie ref Matt Cecchin is still expected to join Super League despite pleas from the NRL to stay.

The highly-respected whistleblower stepped down after growing tired of personal abuse from fans.

SunSport revealed his family was hit by death threats after his contentious but correct call that sealed England's World Cup semi-final win over Tonga.

Now NRL chief Graham Annesley is believed to have contacted 41-year-old Cecchin twice to try and talk him into staying in Australia.

But sources have told SunSport they believe he is still set on coming over with the aim of taking charge of matches next year.
