Alligator wrestlers wade about BLINDFOLDED to catch the creatures

Bird Box Challenge? We’re way ahead of you, say alligator wrestlers who wade about BLINDFOLDED to catch the deadly creatures – then kiss them

  • Daredevils filmed wrestling gators at Colorado Gator Farm in Mosca, Colorado
  • Four wade through water blindfolded before grabbing an alligator and kissing it
  • Clip mimics the ‘Bird Box challenge’ in which social media users film themselves going about their everyday lives while blindfolded in an ode to the Netflix thriller

Blindfolded daredevils pick up alligators and kiss them on the foreheads in a version of the ‘Bird Box challenge’ filmed years before the trend began.

The clip, recorded at Colorado Gator Farm, in Mosca, Colorado, captures four friends as they wade through water in search of an alligator.

Natasha Burdo, Charlie Fox, Tiffany Ann Bradford and Scott Newcombe each reach out their hands out until they locate a gator in the murky swamp while blindfolded.

They then pluck a creature out of the water and kiss it on the forehead as a crowd watches on from the bridge above.

The video, filmed six years ago, mimics the ‘Bird Box challenge’ – in which people who have viewed the Netflix thriller go about their everyday lives while blindfolded.

Gator handler Jason McDonald, 37, said the group had been part of a wrestling class helping collect as many gators as possible for wellness checks before the winter.

But as many people come back to the class each year, Mr McDonald decided to add an element of difficulty for skilled catchers – and asked them to wear blindfolds.

Mr McDonald, from Aurora, Colorado, said: ‘It’s a lot harder to catch them blindfolded. It’s more of a self-confidence thing.

Each of the group then plucks a creature out of the water and kisses it on the forehead as a crowd watch on from a bridge above

‘If you have a basic understanding of the behaviour of the gators you can work your way up to the gators and get behind them.

‘When you are catching them blindfolded, you have to really move your hands gently and finesse the gator so they think it’s another alligator bumping into them.

‘When the gators are underwater they can’t tell if someone’s hand is another gator or rock, so typically they won’t bite right away.

‘There’s always the possibility you’ll get bit.’

The clip was captured at Colorado Gator Farm in 2013 – and it mimics the ‘Bird Box challenge’ five years before the Netflix film that inspired the social media trend was released.

Gator handler Jason McDonald said he remembered he and his friends had undertaken something similar when he watched the Netflix film

In the film, Sandra Bullock’s character is unable to leave her house without a blindfold as she attempts to escape a mystery foe.

The movie has sparked an unusual trend of social media users filming themselves doing tasks while blindfolded – the ‘Bird Box challenge’.

Mr McDonald said he remembered he and his friends had undertaken something similar when he watched the film.

He said: ‘I think it’s great seeing so many people challenge themselves with it.

‘I do think it’s not worth it to risk serious injury or death to get a Bird Box picture or video. I think it’s cool we came up with something that has taken off this year.

‘We get a lot of people saying we are crazy and nuts when they see the videos.

‘It’s for sure not something your average person would want to try.’
