Alex Salmond faces backlash after crowd-funding for £100,000 in legal fees in sexual misconduct row

His appeal is near to hitting £100,000 — double its target.

The former First Minister of Scotland launched it the day after quitting the SNP amid claims he harassed two women civil servants.

He denies the allegations and is suing the Scottish Government over its handling of an eight-month probe.

But critics branded his online campaign an “abuse of power” and said it could stop women coming forward.

The Scottish Conservatives said Scotland “now faces the incredible situation of its most famous former First Minister appealing to SNP supporters for cash to take legal action against the Government he used to run.”

Scottish Labour women’s spokeswoman Rhoda Grant said: “The idea he needs help from working class Scots to crowd-fund his legal fees is ludicrous.

It is sickening behaviour and dragging Scotland into the gutter.”

Labour MP Danielle Rowley tweeted a link to Women’s Aid and said: “Instead of donating to a rich and powerful man, I have a better idea.”

Mr Salmond’s successor Nicola Sturgeon also posted links to an unconnected fundraiser by Rape Crisis and Women’s Aid.

And she rubbished claims he was the victim of an Establishment conspiracy against nationalists.

She said: “Two individuals brought forward complaints.

They deserve to have due process.

“Alex Salmond deserves to have due process. So, let’s not get diverted or distracted.”

Last night, Mr Salmond said costs could end up around £150,000 and any surplus cash raised would go to charity.

Details of the investigation were passed to police last week and are still being assessed.
