X Factor’s Simon Cowell gets blast from the past as Pop Idol contestant returns

A blast from Simon Cowell’s past comes back for a second chance on the opening X Factor show.

Pop Idol contestant Danny Tetley made it down to the final stages on the ITV show 17 years ago before failing to impress Cowell in the latter stages of the series.

After years crooning in Benidorm bars he comes back for another shot at the bigtime and fans love him during his audition.

Robbie Williams and Louis Tomlinson also praise his positive outlook on life in an emotional audition.

The 37-year-old singer auditioned for Simon on Pop Idol but was sent packing because of his looks.

Before singing Broadway hit And I am Telling You, Danny said: “I did try for Simon many years ago on a TV show called Pop Idol, not a lot happened, it’s why I’m back here.

“Simon was very nice but back then it was a very image led business.

“This is my World Cup final, I’ve waited 17 years to show I’ve still got it, I’ve still got the same passion as before.”

Viewers will find out on Saturday’s show if he gets through to the final stages of the competition or returns to Spain to play late night sets in bars and clubs.

Danny was also once at the centre of a viewer backlash after appearing as an extra on ITV comedy Benidorm.

Loose Woman Sherrie Hewson’s alter ego Joyce Temple-Savage poked fun of his cleft palate saying he had “the voice of a 13-year-old girl and a face like a dropped pie”.

That sparked complaints to telly watchdog Ofcom which later ruled not to take any action against the show.
