When Olivia Rodrigo released her song, Drivers License, speculations grew that it was about Bassett, although Rodrigo never confirmed it.

Singer and former High School Musical cast member Joshua Bassett, 20, is speaking out after Olivia Rodrigo's song Drivers License made it to the number one spot on iTunes sales charts in January 2021.
Rogrigo's song was also featured in a sketch on Saturday Night Live in February 2021.
However, Bassett is now speaking out in the release of three new songs, Crisis, Secret, and Set Me Free, all of which was written six months ago.
"I finally found the courage to speak up for myself," Bassett said in an interview with GQ. He has received backlash after Rodrigo's song was released.
In one instance he said, “I would see TikToks with like 50 million views and 10 million likes saying, ‘If I ever see that kid on the street, I'm going to fucking kill him.'
“It's hard to see that and then be living in New York and walking down the street.”
Bassett said he reached out to Rodrigo numerous times but she hasn't responded.
He added, his intent with his new songs is not to "expose" anyone, it's just something he said he had to get off his chest.
“It was eating me alive, and I couldn’t keep it in anymore," he told GQ, adding, he is a different person than he was when they dated, but he isn't ready for love.
"Ultimately, being in a relationship is a responsibility. I don't know if I'm ready for that,” he said.
“I've only had three [relationships], despite what it seems. … I’m good on my own. I don’t need somebody else.”
Bassett was rumored to be dating Disney co-star Sabrina Carpenter in June 2020, after he and Rodrigo broke up. Their supposed relationship has not been confirmed.
Joshua was first spotted with Sabrina when they were seen grabbing lunch together in August 2020 while out in Los Angeles.

Although it was never confirmed, rumors circulated that Bassett and Rodrigo did previously date before he and Carpenter became an item.
Bassett and Rodrigo played on-screen couple Ricky and Nini in the High School Musical spinoff.
In August 2020, Olivia posted a video to TikTok to her song All I Want from the HSMTMTS soundtrack.
She captioned the TikTok: "And that’s on failed relationships."
Adding fuel to the dating rumors, Joshua even admitted he improvised the iconic “I love you” scene between his character and Olivia's.
“It is the most powerful feeling in the world when you don’t even have to think, and it just comes through you. It was really a magical moment," he told the Los Angeles Times in January 2020
“Every single time, I would change it to something else that was specific to her and I, and getting her reaction out of it was the best thing in the world,” he said of the High School Musical scene.
Olivia spoke to the outlet about Joshua in January 2020 and said, “I love him so much.
"He’s my best friend, so that really made the acting authentic and really truthful. It was like I wasn’t acting.”
