Vikings airs on History and Prime Video, and the release of season six part B was bittersweet for fans. Despite one of the main characters, Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel), being killed off in season four, the historical drama series still has a huge following. Fans are keen to find out whether there will be a season seven of Vikings and Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.
Will there be a season 7 of Vikings?
The long-running historical drama series first landed on screens back in 2013 and over the years it has gained a loyal following.
A total of 89 episodes have aired. But sadly back in January 2019, it was announced season six would be the final season of the series.
With this in mind, there will unfortunately not be a season seven of Vikings.
The trailer for the final segment of season six says “the saga comes to an end”, and everything was indeed wrapped up in the final 10 episodes.
Still, fans will always remain hopeful for another season.
But fans need not be disheartened as a spin-off sequel series, called Vikings: Valhalla, is in the making for Netflix.
Some characters’ storylines, including that of Rollo (Clive Standen), will be tied up in the spin-off.
The sequel is set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, as England starts to make a stand against the Scandinavian invaders.
Creator Michael Hirst said in a statement amidst the renewal of season six: “I always knew how Vikings would end and, after 89 episodes, I truly believe the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons has been told and we are leaving our beloved fans with the proper and definitive ending they so deserve.
“Although it is bittersweet, there are still 20 episodes left and the most ambitious and intensely emotional episodes are still to come.”
Some fans said they were not surprised to hear the series was coming to an end after Ragnar died.
The star of the show was killed off after he was thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes in season four.
After his death plenty of fans had threatened to boycott the series, saying it was “pointless” without Ragnar.
Some fans took to Reddit to suggest theories on how the series will come to an end.
Kierankitz said: “I’ll put money on it ending with the Battle of Hastings being won by Rollo’s (Clive Standen) son, given how they compress the timeline.”
Wryan12 said: “It definitely took a hit after Ragnar left. That being said, I do think the last few episodes have been really strong.”
Some fans have said the spin-off sequel “softens the blow” as they would have liked to have seen more of the cast.
Finniruse said: “The show has been great since Ragnar died! Not quite as good, but Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) has exactly the same charisma that kept me enthralled in the earlier seasons.
“And I see a lot of hate for Floki’s (Gustaf Skarsgård) story. I don’t get that either. It’s fascinating.
“Maybe it’s because I studied Icelandic Literature for a module at uni, but man I love where it’s going, so much so I hope the spin-off series is specifically about Iceland.”
Before the news that season six would be the final season, fans had hoped to see Ragnar’s sons grow old in season seven.
The5thRoom said: “I would say they’ll hit seven and be done. By then we’ll get to know the sons completely and their stories will be mostly told. Anything beyond that is a serious mistake.”
Since Ragnar died, Ivar has become one of the main characters in season six, so fans felt the series would have to end when Ivar’s story comes to an end.
Fans are wondering whether Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) will kill his brother Ivar in a final battle.
Andersen posted a photo of himself as Ivar on Instagram, with long hair and a beard, suggesting his character ages in the final episodes.
He said: “At first glance, you obviously think this is Leo D in The Revenant. With a touch of Tom Hanks in Cast Away.
“But no. It’s ME, Jedi master Boneless, with an obviously REAL beard, not put on by the great master that is @puffjockey. Here’s to you, season six of @historyvikings.”
