The Walking Dead: Michonne’s exit marks another death knell for AMC series?

The Walking Dead may be approaching its 10th season but that doesn’t mean it has showed any signs of let-up.

Twice a year, you can almost bet your entire life-fortune the zombie show will be on screens.

This year will be no different as the series will return once more but Michonne (played by Danai Gurira), who first appeared in season three, will be departing.

Little is known about her impending exit but how much drama can fans take from the already brutal AMC series?

The Walking Dead has thrown up some incredible and unmissable moments but in what was perhaps the most highly-anticipated scene of the series, it messed up.

When Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was about to swing Lucille at one unlucky victim, viewers held their breaths, but they were bitterly disappointed when they had to wait a whole season to see who was killed.

Fans can pretty much pinpoint the downfall of The Walking Dead to this moment.

Furthermore, it’s never really reached the dizzying heights of tensions, suspense, and good storylines, since season six closed out with blood pouring over the camera.

The storylines simply haven’t been as strong.

Negan, it turned out, was incredibly fallible and was toppled within two seasons while the incoming Whisperers, led by the genuinely terrifying Alpha (Samantha Morton), also look set to be easily defeated.

In the days of the Governor (David Morrissey), there was a genuine threat and when a character was killed, it really served a purpose.

Sadly, the talented cast appear to be dropping like flies with Michonne the latest character to leave.

Showrunner Angela Kanadded: “On the writing side, we take the responsibility very seriously. It’s important to the fans and to us. When we worked on the exit for Andy, we took it just as seriously.

“We want to do right by this incredible actress and this story. I hope we haven’t screwed it up. We put her through her paces this year. She’s a spectacular actress. She brought her A++ game, as she always does.”

These are all lovely sentiments but it’s certain fans will all feel the same – who didn’t see this coming?

When Andrew Lincoln hung up his sheriff’s hat last year, fans had to resign to themselves the fact the end was nigh.

Nevertheless, the show continues – but can The Walking Dead actually save itself?

Speaking at San Diego Comic Con, Danai finally confirmed the news, telling those in Hall H: “I can confirm that this is the last season I will be on this amazing TV show as Michonne.

“I would just like to say that this has been one of the purest joys of my life to play this role and to be amongst these people and those who are not here right now and amongst all of you.

“I’m very thankful for the experience I’ve had in ways I can’t state right now. My heart does not leave in any way, shape or form.

“The The Walking Dead family is forever. The connection between us never ends.”

Danai added: “It was a very difficult decision. It is not connected to my heart. My heart stays right here. It was about my calling and other things I feel called to.

“The opportunities I’ve had, exploring it as a creator of work. I’m filled with a lot of pain about leaving and a lot of gratitude. I am thankful to all of you. I love you guys, and I love this show. The TWD family is forever.“

There’s already been the promise of at least two more spin-offs on top of Fear the Walking Dead, and while some could say it’s an overkill, they actually have a pretty exciting prospect.

One will feature Rick and where he got to in that pesky helicopter and the other is set to focus on women in the early days of survival.

Both are set to offer different perspectives on the drama and more importantly, come closer to explaining why on earth the zombie apocalypse happened in the first place.

What’s more, Robert Kirkman’s comics have now concluded, meaning there’s only so much further fans can go in Alexandria anyway – unless the show surpasses these.

While I have been an avid fan of The Walking Dead since the beginning, it’s certainly time to recognise it’s time is up. Hey, it did very well.

It’s good to recognise when it’s time to go and pave the way for a new and exciting show. Some fans even think Fear the Walking Dead is better than its original anyway.

So Michonne, please hold the door while you leave, I reckon we’ll all be following you pretty soon.

The Walking Dead season 10 begins Sunday 6 October at 9pm on AMC.
