Oscar winner Viola Davis, known for her roles in The Help and Fences, is reprising her role as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad, according to TheWrap.
Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, wrote the script and has been hired on to direct the film, which will premiere in theaters on August 6, 2021.
Producer Peter Safran shared recently in an interview that Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is not a sequel, but a complete reboot.
“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot,” Safran told JoBlo.
Margot Robbie is reportedly returning as Harley Quinn in the reboot, along with starring in the upcoming Birds of Prey film as her character of Harley Quinn, with a release date of February 7, 2020. Idris Elba is also in talks to take over Will Smith’s character of Deadshot.
It is reported that The Suicide Squad will be going in an entirely new direction with Gunn helming the project. The DC supervillains will reportedly be recruited by the government to work on missions that are too raw for superheroes like Batman and Superman.
Last month, it was announced that Gunn has been reinstated as director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 months before, after being fired by Disney for old tweets that had recirculated on social media.
Gunn’s public apology, along with huge backlash from fans and his Guardians cast mates, persuaded Walt Disney Chairman, Alan Horn, to reconsider his decision. However, Suicide Squad 2 is now first in line for Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has gotten pushed back.
