The Great British Bake Off's Sophie Faldo says winning the show wasn't a positive experience

We don’t want to dim the Great British Bake Off‘s shine or anything, but last year’s winner Sophie Faldo has revealed a slightly soggy evaluation of what it’s like to be a Bake Off champion.

Ahead of the new series’ launch this evening (August 28), Sophie has been talking to HuffPost about her experience of winning the coveted Bake Off trophy – and it’s not exactly positive.

Actually, it’s not at all, because when asked if winning had always been a positive experience for her, Sophie answered: “No. No.”

“I’d love to propagate this idea that it’s all bunting and rainbows,” Sophie explained, “but although the show itself is all lovely and very positive… [there’s] pressure.”

At least it wasn’t Prue Leith’s fault, eh.

GBBO‘s 2017 champion went on to say that although she’s received “lovely” feedback from fans of the show, being “thrust into” the public eye has made things difficult.

“I’m freelance and trying to carve a career and that’s just as difficult regardless of where you became famous,” she said. “The end point is always the same, it’s always that pressure that you feel going on.”

Fortunately, it’s not all crumby for Sophie (sorry) – the former army officer also admitted she had been “very lucky” with her feedback from the show and that any pressure she felt was “self-induced”. “I want to do well and I want to try and make a career out of this,” she added.

With the latest series of the hit reality show kicking off in a matter of hours, Sophie will soon have fresh competition in the form of this year’s Bake Off dozen.

Want to meet them? You can right here.

A brand new series of The Great British Bake Off starts tonight (August 28) at 8pm on Channel 4.
