Jose Mourinho’s position as Manchester United boss is safe – for now.
Despite back-to-back Premier League defeats, which have seen United slump to 13th in the table, Mourinho retains the backing of the Old Trafford board.
United slumped to a shock 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Monday, which came on the back of their abject 3-2 loss away at Brighton.
But Mourinho still has the backing of United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and owners the Glazers, although further defeats could see a shift in that stance.
Mourinho takes his United side to Burnley on Sunday, knowing he must produce a win to bring some respite to the growing crisis that has engulfed him in his third season in charge.
Woodward and the United hierarchy were encouraged by the impressive first-half display against Spurs, undermined only by a failure to take the chances created.
United fell apart after the break, conceding three times, but Woodward was impressed with the solidarity between Mourinho and the fans at the final whistle, despite the heavy defeat.
Mourinho stood at the Stretford End for a prolonged period after the final whistle and applauded those United fans who remained, for their loyalty in the face of such a difficult loss.
That gesture is understood to have impressed Woodward and the rest of the United board, who still believe Mourinho is the right man to try to steer them to glory this season.
Against that backdrop, Mourinho has been told to carry on as normal, although he is experienced enough to know that further defeats could bring about a mood shift among his bosses.

Woodward and his colleagues have little choice but to back Mourinho, who signed a contract extension until 2020 in January, with so few alternative options out there on the market.
But there will be no knee-jerk reaction from United, despite the Reds having suffered two defeats in their first three league games since the inaugural Premier League season of 1992-93.
