The Grand Tour: Real reason Jeremy Clarkson teared up as he hits out at Top Gear exit

Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear in 2015 and went on to work with Amazon Prime to create The Grand Tour with Richard Hammond and James May.

In the final moments of season three, Jeremy was seen tearing up as he said goodbye to the tent where they present the show and the live studio audience.

Now, the 59-year-old has opened up about why he was so emotional as he wrapped up the latest season.

“The truth of it is, I think, I never got the chance to say goodbye to Top Gear,” Jeremy explained.

“One minute I was there and one minute I wasn’t. It was like, did the show and then never did another one.”

Jeremy went on to add to The Sun: “Never said goodbye. Never got a gold watch. Never got a retirement speech. Nothing.

“So this was almost as though we were saying goodbye to Top Gear as well. That’s why it was so emotional for me.”

In the final episode of The Grand Tour season three, Jeremy asked the audience: “Who would like to see us do more big adventures?”

Of course, the audience cheered as the trio’s road trips are a beloved feature of the show.

He continued: “Road trips? Road trips? Specials, do you want some specials?”

His co-host Richard went on to add there was “still so much of the world” they hadn’t explored while James noted there was so many cars “he hadn’t crashed”.

Jeremy continued: “So while all of this is gone, The Grand Tour goes on. It goes on. It goes on.

“So while it’s not goodbye from us, it is goodbye from this. Anyone want to buy a tent?”

The Grand Tour is set to return for a fourth seres on Amazon Prime next year.

Meanwhile, Jeremy appeared to take a swipe at Top Gear when he appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show.

Host Jonathan asked: “On a scale of one to ten, how thrilled are you that Top Gear is nowhere near as successful now you’re not on it?”

Jeremy grinned before replying: “It’s a hard face to pull, this one. Let me try.”

He went on to add: “James and Richard always wish them all the best.”

But the former Top Gear host kept changing his mind when he was asked if he too wishes the hosts the best.

The Grand Tour season 3 is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
