Season four of The Good Place was brought to a close on NBC and around the world on Netflix at the start of 2020. The series finale remains one of the most bittersweet TV moments of the year, and was made even more heart-wrenching as the cast have been unable to reunite during the coronavirus pandemic. Ted Danson had some touching words for his fellow co-stars.
Michael Schur’s latest sitcom for NBC, The Good Place, received critical acclaim for its hilarious blend of comedy and philosophy.
The series stars Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, a selfish saleswoman who wakes up after her untimely death to find herself in a bizarre afterlife.
She is quickly introduced to Michael (played by Ted Danson), who shows her around her new home.
However, chaos soon ensues in the first season, and Michael is eventually revealed to be the demonic architect of what is actually a version of The Bad Place.
As the series progresses, Michael starts to reform his wicked ways and teams up with Eleanor, Tahani (Jameela Jamil), Chidi (William Jackson Harper) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) to fight for a fairer afterlife for humans.
The group of dead humans were also joined by Janet (D’Arcy Carden), a bubbly and omniscient personal assistant.
The fantastical sitcom came to an end in January 2020 as the group constructed a new version of The Good Place.
For hundreds of years, Eleanor and her friends were able to party, travel and relax in the afterlife before deciding to step out into the unknown.
The series finally was remarked as a touching goodbye to the series, which many felt was cancelled prematurely.
During a Q&A session for Deadline, the cast of The Good Place reunited via video chat to discuss the series finale and their experiences on the show.
The stars were asked what they learned during the show’s four seasons, with a few confirming they had picked up some insightful philosophy knowledge due to the speculative and academic nature of the series.
When Deadline came to Ted Danson, the sitcom legend appeared to tear up as he recalled his time working alongside Kristen Bell.

Danson said: “I learned that I’ve never worked with anyone like Kristen Bell. You were such an amazing captain of the ship.”
Previously known for his starring role in Cheers during the 1980s and 90s, Ted Danson made his long-awaited return to sitcoms as part of the main cast of The Good Place.
His role as Michael landed him several Emmy nominations, and he picked up a Critics’ Choice Award for his performance in 2017.
Danson was given another chance to shine on The Good Place, and his on-screen chemistry with Kristen Bell was praised as the highlight of the series.
Praising his co-star, he continued: “You were so elegant, you were so effortless, you were so beautiful, and you set a tone that matched [showrunner] Mike’s words. You really did. And I adore you and I miss you terribly.”
Bell seemed incredibly touched by his comments, as she replied “I love you!”, with Danson adding “Love you all!”
Although the series is over, the cast were able to reunite once more to watch the finale together and couldn’t help getting as emotional as the show’s fans when it aired back in January.
The Good Place seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
