Fans will remember in Stranger Things season two Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp) became infected with a dangerous virus that was controlled by the Mind Flayer from the Upside Down.
The Mind Flayer was able manipulate him into doing what he wanted and was able to speak through him.
Eventually, the creature was exorcised from his body and he recovered from the virus.
Now, with the Mind Flayer set to return for season three, it appears Billy (Dacre Montgomery) may suffer a similar fate and become the season’s big villain.
Billy was supposed to have a bigger role
Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed that in the season three trailer Billy is looking at a huge black and blooded mark on his arm, symptomatic of a severe infection.
Is the series’ rising star going to be killed off in scenes that would shock viewers?
The actor spoke to The Wrap last year and did not rule out the storyline happening, teasing: “That’s really interesting – you mean using my body as a host? I don’t know, I don’t want to speculate too much.”
Without giving anything away, he does not rule it out and calls it “interesting”.
Co-creator also Matt Duffer teased a big storyline to come for Billy to Vulture: “Billy was supposed to have a bigger role.
“There was a whole teen supernatural storyline that just got booted because it was just too cluttered, you know? A lot of that’s just getting kicked into season three.”
Being infected by the Mind Flayer would certainly constitute a supernatural storyline for Billy.
Fans really are worried about a tragedy affecting one of their favourite characters, with one Twitter user saying: “Listen I know Billy is an absolute a*****e in Stranger Things but god I hope he doesn’t transform into that creature. Or die. He’s far too beautiful to lose. He’s just so pretty.”
Another added: “Watched the Stranger Things trailer and honestly, if they turn Billy into a monster I’m going to be so disappointed.
“He has a lot of potential for a redemption arc and it would be kind of lazy of them to make him the monster of season three.”
There is also the suggestion that he is already possessed by the monster and will start to carry out his work.
The third episode is entitled Chapter Three: The Case of the Missing Lifeguard and we learn from the trailer that Billy has started working as a lifeguard at the Hawkins Community pool, alongside new character Heather.
Will she be the missing lifeguard and will Billy be responsible for her disappearance?
The trailer released on March 20 showed the Mind Flayer return and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) attempt to control it.
It then teases a possible sad ending for Eleven as it cuts to a scene in a shopping mall at the end of the battle showing Eleven bleeding from the nose.
Fans will have to wait to find out Billy’s fate and whether he survives the much-anticipated season three.
Stranger Things season 3 arrives 4 July 2019 on Netflix.
