Stephen Colbert criticized President Trump’s Twitter response to the disturbing news that pipe bombs were sent to numerous prominent Democrats and Trump critics – including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, former Attorney General Eric Holder, California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, Democratic donor George Soros and CNN’s New York bureau.
On Wednesday’s Late Show, the host noted that, while Vice President Mike Pence swiftly responded with a tweet condemning the attempted attacks as “cowardly and despicable,” Trump initially only retweeted Pence’s message with the addition “I agree wholeheartedly!”
“First of all, we fact-checked that one, and it doesn’t work out. You have no ‘whole heart,’” Colbert cracked. “Second, you’re the president. There’s been an attempted attack on two previous presidents today! This is the one time you can’t think of your own tweet? It reminds me of Lincoln’s first draft of the Gettysburg Address: ‘What that first guy said.’”
While authorities have yet to zero in on a suspect, Colbert – noting the political affiliation of the intended targets – revealed a fake sketch of one possibility: “Unabomber” Theodore J. Kaczynski wearing one of Trump’s signature “Make America Great Again” hats.
The comedian covered the news from every angle – from Fox News’ reporting Twitter typo (“Suspicious package sent to CNN contained some kind of ‘white power’ [sic]”) to CNN being the first on the scene after the bomb reached their offices. “It’s ironic,” he said. “It’s like back when The New York Times was reporting on the Titanic and their offices hit an iceberg.”
