Star Wars Episode 9 title revealed as The Rise of Skywalker trailer reveals shock return of huge villain

STAR WARS Episode 9 will be called The Rise of Skywalker, with a first-look trailer revealing that Emperor Palpatine is alive.

The highly-anticipated teaser also gave fans a glimpse of Billy Dee Williams' return as inter-galactic lothario, Lando Calrissian.

The action-packed trailer opens with Rey back on her home-planet of Jakku, as the new Jedi is chased through the desert by an enemy ship.

Igniting her blue lightsaber, Rey turns on the ship before somersaulting through the air and driving the blade through the ship's outer armour.

Kylo Ren proves his villain credentials as he strikes down enemies with his lightsaber, aided by a legion of stormtroopers.

The Star Wars: Episode IX panel at the Celebration event in Chicago kicked off with director J.J. Abrams revealing that the trilogy finale won't pick up immediately after the events of 2017's The Last Jedi, claiming that "some time has gone by."

After fans got a glimpse of Billy's return as Lando – complete with iconic yellow and brown cloak – it was teased that the lothario character has a daughter joining the resistance in Episode 9.

British actor Naomi Ackie revealed her character's name of Jannah, and strongly hinted that Lando is her father.

Staying tight-lipped, Naomi added: "All I can say, is the original group are going on this epic adventure together and I am so excited about where Janna crosses paths with them."

John Boyega – who plays Finn in the sequel trilogy – confirmed that his character's long-term foe Captain Phasma has died permanently after a shock return in the previous movie.

He explained: "Finn has found his footing and his identity within the resistance."

Director J.J. went on to explain how the thought of recasting the role of Leia Organa was "impossible" following the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher in 2016.

He told audiences: "The idea of using a CG character was off the table, we didn't want to even try.

"The crazy thing is, and I say this emotionally, every day it hits me that she's not here. But it is so surreal because we are working with her still… Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is kind of mind-blowing to me."

It was confirmed earlier today that Star Wars fans won't see any new movies for a number of years following Episode 9.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told Bloomberg: "There are movies in development, but we have not announced them…

"We will take a pause, some time, and reset, because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus."

The force is strong with British fans as Star Wars: Epidose IX will be released in the UK on December 19 – one day before the US release.
