New Queen of the South showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez brought back fan favourite James Valdez in a jaw-dropping twist for the season finale. However, fans of the series have been wondering if Teresa’s ex-boyfriend will be returning as part of the main cast when the USA Network series resumes. Rodriguez took to Twitter with the answers.

Viewers were bowled over by the latest instalment of Queen of the South, which saw queenpin Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) shift her drug-running operations to New Orleans.

After spreading her product to the streets of the Big Easy, Teresa faced off against a frightening new rival, Judge Lafayette (David Andrews).

In the run up to the season finale, fans were already grief-stricken by the loss of Teresa’s godson, Tony Parra (Julian Silva).

Emotionally rocked by Tony’s death, fans barely had time to brace themselves for yet another game-changing reveal in the season finale; the return of James Valdez (Peter Gadiot).

James’ comeback heralded a thrilling start to the next season, as he arrived clutching a nasty wound and warning Teresa of an approaching threat.

Unfortunately, extensive coronavirus delays have meant the series was considerably delayed, and Queen of the South’s fifth season won’t surface until next year.

During the excruciating build up, fans have had plenty of time to ruminate over the latest twists.

As the hiatus continues, the audience has been pressing showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez for answers regarding James’ return to the series.

In her latest post on Twitter, Rodriguez addressed rumours that James would only be back in a limited capacity, and could even be killed off at the start of season five.

She wrote: “I know it’s the election & everybody’s laser focused on it, but I feel like a lot of #QueenoftheSouth fans only care about one thing.”

Despite President Trump and Joe Biden going head-to-head in the most monumental political event of the year, TV fans still have Queen of the South’s season finale on their minds.

Thankfully, Rodriguez denied speculation and confirmed: “YES, JAMES IS IN S5.”

The head writer proceeded to laugh off fans who were concerned the writers would be cruel enough to kill off the beloved character after just a tiny guest appearance.

She joked: “U think we’d have him in the S4 finale just to kill him off? Do u think we are barbarians?”

Her tweet was met with an ecstatic reaction from fans, many of whom are keen to see Teresa and James reforge their romance in season five.

One commented: “Yes!! Now include lots of #Jeresa moments in s5 and we’ll be elated.”

While another made reference to the US election again and said: “Yes! Actually we need a really good distraction at this point!”

Unfortunately, Dailyn Rodriguez was unable to confirm a set release date for the premiere of Queen of the South season five.

However, as the cast and crew are currently filming on location in New Orleans, an update on the series’ 2021 schedule could hopefully surface soon after the new year.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
