Line of Duty finale asked as many questions as it answered, says Ian Hyland

I appreciate that some viewers may have been disappointed that the Who Is H? mystery wasn’t fully solved tonight.

However, if you’ve been with this show since the very start you probably wouldn’t have been too surprised.

You wouldn’t have minded too much either, because this was a thrilling finale that posed almost as many new questions as it answered old ones. We all knew there was a sixth series on the way, so the chances of all the loose ends being neatly tied up were always going to be pretty slim.

Obviously, Jed Mercurio can’t keep stringing out the H plot forever — but the latest twist was a classic Line Of Duty curveball.

It turned out that Dot Cottan’s dying declaration (which started the whole H thing off in the first place)was not pointing the finger at one bent copper.

It would appear there were four. And only three have been uncovered so far. So there’s still one out there. And it could still be Ted Hastings.

The way we discovered this news may have stretched credibility to breaking point, but you cannot deny it was incredibly exciting.

DS Steve Arnott suddenly developed a sixth sense that suggested The X-Men may soon have a new member, possibly called Waistcoato.

It was nothing short of miraculous that Arnott somehow managed to deduce from a freeze-framed shot of Dot’s dying declaration that Dot was doing something important with his left hand.

And that was before you asked yourself why none of the crack team of detectives who had previously viewed the footage had spotted Dot was apparently tapping out a Morse code message with his thumb.

You may also have been scratching your head at DI Kate Fleming being so convinced that Dot tapping out the four dots of H twice meant that there were four bent coppers. I mean, Dot could have been just doing it twice for emphasis.

Heck, for all we know he may have simply been trying to pass on his secret chilli con carne recipe to Kate.

That’s right.

The sneaky old fox obviously put harissa in it.
