Fans of the hit Law and Order franchise have been waiting for Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to admit their feelings for one other since they began solving crimes together on NBC over 20 years ago. While they may be heading up their own units and with Stabler’s Organized Crime task force currently in jeopardy, some revealing insight into the current seasons has exposed their much-teased romance might be closer to becoming a reality than viewers may have thought.

Executive producer Julie Martin has promised the Benson-Stabler situation will finally make some progress in the coming weeks, but fans aren’t so convinced.

In the latest episodes of Organized Crime, Stabler bumps into an old colleague, Tia Leonetti (Ayelet Zurer), who later showed up outside his apartment.

Viewers were concerned they could have slept together, but the following episode put a stop to those theories when the detective is confirmed to have slept on the couch.

However, the morning after Tia slept over arrives with another bombshell when she reveals Stabler drunkenly confessed to being in love with someone else.

Fans, of course, assumed Stabler was referring to his old partner, and now the clock is ticking for Benson to admit she feels the same.

With both Law and Order spin-offs currently on a short hiatus, one fan took to Twitter to ask whether they’ll see the pair take their friendship to the next level any time soon.

@courtneyalysonX asked: “@JulieMartinNY I don’t ask a lot but can you at least tell us if Liv will mention to SOMEONE?

“She’s in love with Stabler? Maybe Rollins before she leaves?” (sic)

To which producer Julie confirmed: “She will talk to Rollins about her feelings for Stabler in Episode 9, Dec 8th.” (sic)

SVU’s fall finale, And a Trauma in a Pear Tree, will feature the final ever appearance of Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish), who will be starting a new career and getting married to Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino).

Rollins’ wedding is also hoped to spur Benson into confessing her love for Stabler, who could finally be ready to begin another relationship.

Even after Julie’s preview, viewers are still not quite willing to believe the investigators are ready to take the next step, though many will keep their fingers crossed throughout the rest of the season.

On Reddit, ImInOverMyHead95 commented: “I’m so over the will-they-won’t-they thing.”

To which GoldenYoba replied: “Seriously, they’re like 60 years old just get on with it already! Too old for this goofiness.”

And Affectionate_Mix8448 added: “Agreed! They are going to lose viewers who are sick of being baited by their relationship.”

Twitter user @RebeccaHunsbe13 suggested: “She should get drunk like Stabler and confess her feelings to Rollins like he did apparently to Tia. It seemed to work.” (sic)

@itsamy_xo reasoned: “Not getting my hopes up because it’s probably another ‘I’m hurt. It’s complicated.

“‘He left for 10 years’ conversation and not an ‘I love him, Amanda. I always have’ conversation like we want/deserve.”

And @huuntresss quipped: “Should we be nervous or excited? One bottle of wine or two??”

Fans will undoubtedly be getting out the tissues for Rollins’ departure, but they probably shouldn’t be getting their hopes up for a loved-up Stabler and Benson reunion just yet.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Organized Crime continue Thursday, December 8 on NBC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
