Kate Garraway reveals her meningitis scare as she returns to work on Good Morning Britain after two weeks off sick

The 51-year-old star returned to ITV's Good Morning Britain today and told hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard how she was rushed to hospital from work two weeks ago – after she couldn't look at the studio lights.

She said: "I came in Friday before last and I couldn't look at the lights and I had a temperature over 40.

"I said, 'I'll be fine' but the director said, 'Even you can't make this funny Kate, there is no way you can do the show, we can't turn the lights off.'

"Actually I went straight to the hospital. They were thinking meningitis, fortunately it wasn't, and they sorted me out and I was fine.

"Can I just say The Wittington Hospiotal, can I tell you how brilliant they were, they saw me straight away and got me on a drip."

Kate was supposed to be hosting The North London Health Star Awards at the same London hospital that night, and she revealed the doctor said: "'Maybe we can just wheel you from the ward?'

"But then he looked at my notes and said, 'No you are way too ill.'"

Her co-stars welcomed her back as Richard Arnold made them laugh and said: "Off sick, or has she been sucking the alcohol out of a deodorant stick again?"

Viewers were delighted to see Kate back on the show, and one wrote on Twitter: " Lovely to see you back Kate."

Kate recently told viewers that her phone has been stolen and her car towed at the hospital after a health scare – all in ONE WEEK.

The star was comforted by her co-host Ranvir Singh back in August as she put on a brave face, and told viewers: "The week's been a bit of a mess. On the way back from holiday my phone was stolen at the airport. And you know what it's like when you're entire life is on your phone? By the way, Mum, I am back. I still haven't got hold of my mum."

She went on to say she had a frightening health scare and was forced to drive to the hospital and park without paying for a space.

She said she knew she'd incur a penalty fine but was devastated to see her car had been towed when she was discharged.

Kate added: "Also, I was a bit poorly, ended up having to go to the hospital this week. Was in longer than I thought. I thought it was going to be a quick thing. I came out, knew it was going to be a ticket in the car park on my car. Towed away!

"Towed away and because I was in a bit of a state, I was walking around thinking, 'Did I leave it there?' So I lost my car, a phone, and my health."
