Kate Garraway opens up on new ‘challenges’ as she shares Derek heartache on GMB

Kate Garraway has updated fans on how her husband Derek Draper is coping in hospital as he battles long Covid.

The ITV host explained to Ben Shephard on Thursday's Good Morning Britain that she's determined to make Christmas as normal as possible for the sake of the children but that it has been hard.

Kate, 53, says the quest to do the right thing left her having a 'lively' conversation with Derek's parents amid fears they could catch the virus if they travelled over Christmas.

Speaking frankly, Kate said: "It's lovely to be back.

"Well there have been a few challenges kicking off and going on, challenge with Derek as there always are but also outside of Derek there was a littles scare.

"We found out that children had been in contact with someone who tested positive shortly after they met.

"So just to be ultra cautious I kept them at home and we luckily we all god negative tests. We actually had two negative tests as you know, more is more."

For former I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star continued: "I did think this is going to be very difficult.

"I have had it before but there is a lack of clarity if after six months you don't have the antibodies any more.

"Back then in March nobody offered us a coronavirus test, they just weren't happening – it was right back when hospitals were swamped in that funny week where schools had just close but lockdown hadn't started.

"Anyway, we are all fine we are all safe but I just wanted to keep you safe Ben and the crew at Smooth Radio so we just started isolating until we got the clearings."

During her short break from the show, Charlotte Hawkins to help co-host the show.

Admitting she's found it tough trying to organise the first Christmas not only with social distancing measures but also with Derek still being in hospital.

Kate continued: "I am finding it real challenging, I find it really tricky.

"Obviously my dream is for us to see him on Christmas day in some way.

"We have to keep really safe to be able to visit him and see him. Then if we do that, can we have his parents over?

"I just want to avoid just the three of us [Kate and the two children] as I think it would make Derek's absence bigger but it is hard to work it out."

In October Daily Star revealed how Derek's parents were braced for not seeing him in person this side of Christmas due to the tier system coming into place.

A source added that "any chance they will be able to before Christmas has all but vanished" due to the fact they live in Lancashire.

Confirming it has been difficult trying to keep a balance of what people want to do and what is safe to do, Kate said: "I was having a lively conversation with the in-laws.

"Then I realised I am almost putting more pressure on them, I just said let's just say 'I don't want the responsibility of you getting sick, you don't want sick and Derek wouldn't want that so let's now try to have an amazing Easter'.

"The reason why Christmas is so special is that it comes in some of the darkest days literally, we really need it for 2020 but we don't want the risks for 2021."
