John Lewis releases its Christmas 2023 advert

John Lewis has defended its latest Christmas advert after fans branded the short film “embarrassing” for not including a father or grandfather within the family involved.

Snapper, the Perfect Tree has divided the public’s opinion, with some loving the tale of a sentient Venus flytrap, and others finding it a bit too weird for their liking.

The advert sees actor Teddy Holton-Frances playing a young boy who brings the fast-growing plant into his family’s home, where he lives with his mother, grandmother, and older sibling.

Whilst there are plenty of single-parent households across the nation, social media users saw an issue with the family dynamic.

Taking to their X accounts, formerly known as Twitter, one user asked: “Where’s the DAD???!!!!!”

Another user added: “You could have at least slipped a token Grandad into the mix.”

A third claimed: “Apparently, men don’t exist at Christmas for whoever runs your marketing team.

“Lots of single Dads out there as well but much more important to look inclusive by excluding 50% of the population. Embarrassing.” (sic)

“It would have been nice to see the Dad or even Grandad” a fourth user quipped.

A fifth user added: “Being a dad, I’ll shop somewhere else this Christmas, thanks”. (sic)

John Lewis didn’t let the backlash go unnoticed, as they replied on their official account: “Showing a mum and a grandma, we always attempt to show a broad representation of British life across our advertising.

“This is a very realistic scenario for thousands of families in the UK.”

Not everyone was unhappy with the advert, as one woman on social media expressed: “Thank you John Lewis for making my mum smile.

“It’s a tradition I show her your ad on the morning of release. My dad died a few months ago, we’re all so sad, especially mum. It made us smile. Sending kindness + love.” (sic)

Another individual said: “Some people just need to appreciate every family is different and have different traditions.

“This year will just be mum, granny and I, cherishing the time we have left together and making memories. The perfect Christmas is whatever you want it to be #traditionsgrow.” (sic)
