How old is Dirty Dancing, who is in the cast, what's on the soundtrack, was there a remake and what are the best quotes?

The timeless classic will once again be shown tonight to celebrate the films 30th anniversary but who was in the original cast and what was the remake? Here's all you need to know…

How old is Dirty Dancing?

Dirty Dancing was first released in May 1987 before its general release occurred several months later in August.

The film was made on a small Hollywood budget of $6 million but it has since grossed over $215 million worldwide, becoming the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.

It's popularity spawned the 2004 prequel film, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights as well as a sell-out stage version in Australia, Europe and North America.

Who's in the cast?

Patrick Swayze starred as a dance teacher called Johnny Castle working at an American holiday resort in the 1950s.

He was joined by Ferris Bueller's Day Off star Jennifer Grey who played teenage holidaymaker Baby who arrives and becomes caught up in Johnny's world after her doctor father performs a secret abortion on Johnny's dance partner Penny.

Cynthia Rhodes played Penny Johnson while Jerry Orbach was Doctor Jake Houseman, Frances "Baby" Houseman's father.

What's on the soundtrack?

Although the film is not technically a musical, its soundtrack has become one of the most famous of all time and has generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple hit singles.

The highlight of the soundtrack is the single (I've Had) The Time of My Life which was awarded both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The song, which was also given a Grammy Award for Best Duet, was used for the scene where Johnny trying to lift her above his head while training in a lake.

The album also spawned the top-five singles Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen, and Patrick Swayze's She's Like the Wind.

Was there a remake?

In 2017 a TV remake was made for US channel ABC, with former X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger playing Penny.

It followed the same story of the 1987 classic, which saw Frances "Baby" Houseman fall in love with dancing instructor Johnny Castle while at a summer resort.

Will And Grace star Debra Messing played Baby's mother, while US actress Abigail Breslin played Baby and Colt Prattes played Johnny.

It was universally panned by critics and fans alike.
